Founded in January of 2012, UnderratedGems’ mission is to spotlight Asian television and celebrities that don’t get as much Western recognition but deserve to be.
Though Asian Dramas only represent a small percentage of my day-to-day life, it’s still amazing how much impact it has bore on my youth. Because of living in a Western environment, it was obviously difficult to find people who share the same interests in Asian fashion, culture, television, and celebrities. But that same interest has given me a desire to learn about the international community, to become more aware of globalization. Jdramas fostered my interest in the Japanese language (okay to be fair, I only took like 2 months of classes, but I know my hiragana yo). I wrote my college supplementary essay on multilingual abilities and why cultural awareness is important in the college community. As a reporter for my school’s newspaper, I wrote on the international impact of the hallyu wave. I think it is just a natural progression that I eventually decided to make a blog discussing Asian media (though my focus is on Mainland Chinese media). Although it began as a discussion for Mainland Chinese dramas, UnderratedGems has evolved into an outlet to express my opinions on various topics of interest, not limited to Asian media entertainment.
