Super Boys Top 8 Recap: Fan Bing Bing steals the show as v-goddess
For last week’s recap of Super Boy (10 battle for 9) – go here.
Everybody gave it their all in this round. Props to Bai Ju Gang, who sang wholeheartedly despite having a hurt throat before competition. Hands down my favorites – Zhang Yang Yang and Bai Ju Gang’s performances. A touching story about Ning Huanyu was revealed in his VCR before he went on stage. Near the final, Fan Bing Bing and costar-music producer Aarif Lee steal the show, singing One Night Surprise‘s theme song. To follow along with this recap, you can watch today’s Super Boy competition here.
So Fan Bing Bing is actually the first one onscreen as she cheers on the boys – football huddle style. Unlike her goddess image, Fan is quite humorous and constantly jokes around with the other judges.
Nicholas Tse is back as Super Boy judge, but now Chen Kun is absent from his usual judge seat for this week. *tears*
Well at least Nicholas and Fan reunites! (see what I mean?)
And FBB daringly flirts with him in public:
Before the boys sing their theme song, we are treated to a strange montage of…uh… can be best described as Super Boys in choir? Everyone is dressed in matching black suits and vests, so formal.
FBB again gets to be V-Goddess and sit in the vip seat. She jokes that she’s content to be a voting robot representative for the online fans.
Rao Wei is first (garnering the most online debate 话题王) and he challenges Zuo Li. To be honest, don’t like either of them. But they both really surprised me! Both improved so much! Rao Wei kept up this game from last week where he displayed a daring, ‘sly vixen’ side to him (normally so sweet and shy looking) and Zuo Li sings a new original that he created when he was in the Super Boy boot camp (they call it chengbao, or castle 城堡). Zuo Li’s chorus part is really good and not boring like his other ballads anymore. I don’t even know which one will win now.
OK so now we find out the judges voted for Zuo Li.
The Weibo-obsessed (weibo kong 微博控) TV host He Jiong makes some commentary throughout.
Second group: Ou Hao pitted against Yu Tian: the slightly more dance-y kiddos
Ou Hao performs “Du U love me”, a rap song, with more confidence and a better beat than his previous raps.
Yu Tian packs a powerful punch in “The Wings of Light”, going for a more rock feel.
Ou Hao emerges as winner, to no one’s surprise. The judges all love him, and frankly, I’m beginning to like this guy too. He just has that sexy confidence in himself. But then, Yu Tian did really well too. Now Yu Tian is put into to-be-determined, and you know the drill, he’ll have to see if he has a chance near the end.
Third group: Ning Huanyu challenges Hua Chenyu (AGAIN 😀) It’s so fun watching them PK each other because they’re equally awesome in terms of musical talent. But ewwwie Hua Chenyu goes for YET ANOTHER english song, a popular one at that. Heard of “Let’s set the worrrlld on firrrree” yet? Yeah, it’s time to revisit that one again, but now with an Engrish twist.
Fourth group: Bai Ju Gang choose to PK Zhang Yang Yang. WOW ok how do I begin? These two are my favorites who have this ‘happy boy’ vibe. Bai, who normally has a very strong voice, had some problems with his voice earlier in the day, which affected his performance. And then Zhang Yang Yang who is our resident Prince of Love Songs (I dub thee) made his most memorable performances yet:
Bai Ju Gang performs “The Most Beautiful Sun” – omg so good! I feel like Bai’s gone from serious-melancholy songs to uplifting songs. He is slowly but surely rising up in ranks among his Super Boy rivals. Bright-faced, honest voice, and hardworking – He is the representative of Super Boy in my opinion (Super Boy’s Chinese name actually means ‘happy boys/happy song’).
Zhang Yang Yang revisits his first-ever song he learnt while studying in police school, a half-Mandarin-half-Uyghur song “Love At First Sight”.
But wait – what about Little Qiang?!
There’s 9 of them, so Jia Sheng Qiang (Little Q for short) can now challenge any of the four who were placed into to-be-determined: Rao Wei, Yu Tian, Ning Huanyu, and Bai Ju Gang.
Little Q battles Ning Huanyu – Ning Huanyu wins.
So now, in the final PK is Little Q and Bai Ju Gang, and Rao Wei and Yu Tian are sent directly to Top 8.
So after the 1000 fans voted, Jia Sheng Qiang is eliminated this round, making him rank #9. This doesn’t conclude our recap! Here’s some eye candy and amazing music to enjoy:
Unfortunately I don’t have the video of their on stage performance, but you can see the MV version here.
what do you think? who do you predict will land top 5 (eventually)? 😛 Though I’ve guessed, it’s too soon to really be sure. For instance, Rao Wei, who showed weakness in singing during the first few rounds actually manages to bounce back. Same goes for Zuo Li. On the opposite end, I didn’t expect Yu Tian to be placed into the to-be-determined twice in a row because he had such a nice stage presence when competing for the Top 20.
